Research shows that ADHD brains behave differently to neurotypical brains. However, imaging technology such as CT scans or PET scans or MRIs cannot be used to diagnose ADHD. This is partly because they aren't sensitive enough to distinguish between possible causes and work on a case by case basis.

Although there are many tests that can be done to diagnose ADHD, it is not necessary. You can diagnose it through interview, observation, and so on. It is often just a matter of the observations of a trained medical professional such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, pediatrician, or other mental health professionals.

The symptoms must be present for at least six months, in at least two settings (at school or at home) and have to have a negative impact on work, school, or personal functioning. Patients below 17 need to have at least 6 symptoms. 17 or higher must show at most 5. However, even medical professionals can't guarantee a correct diagnosis.
