VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

The term active mental workspace is used to describe working memory. It is a cognitive system that allows us hold and manipulate online information for a few seconds when we are problem-solving or doing other cognitive activities. It's his internal representation in our working memory that guides our decision-making. This ensures that actions and behaviour are not influenced by immediate
. Sensory cues are found in the environment. Long-term memory, on the other hand, is often called a filing system. It allows for more long-term or stable storage. Cues in the environment and in working memory often trigger the need for information to be quickly retrieved from long-term memories and brought into working memory.
In contrast, information stored in working memory might be reorganized and encoded into long-term memories. Here are some examples of what could happen if a teacher interrupts instructions or gives them out of order:
"Okay students. Look at your math worksheet. There are subtraction and addition questions. Be sure to not use the wrong sign, and I want you to solve the problems. "Children who are in a band should be aware that practice will take place in a gym at noon. "Please remember to add your name and date at the top of the worksheet before you begin. This is a good example of working memory in a child who is typically developing. The student takes the first instruction and retrieves the relevant information from his long-term memory. The student now interprets the teacher's instructions and creates an internal representation and stores them online. The student uses the PA announcement to extract critical information, store it in long-term memories for later use, and protect the information in his/her working memory from any interference.
This illustration shows how ADHD students use their working memory. It's important that you remember that ADHD students may have less working memory. First, the student's ability to respond to repeated math difficulties takes up valuable working memory space. Because of his slower processing speed, he is unable to translate complex instructions. He tries to keep them on-line verbatim. The PA announcement has changed the balance. He is suffering from cognitive overload. He's unable to block the irrelevant information that triggers retrieval. Relevant information is now lost from the working memory. There is no space for the final instructions regarding details such as date and name. He is left with the Gestalt for the task, with no details and any irrelevant information online that could affect his performance.
