Is TMS Therapy Right For You?
Many people who suffer from depression often suffer for years before they get help for this condition or before the condition is accurately diagnosed. Once a diagnosis of depression has been made you need to work with your mental health professional to find the right treatment for you.
In most cases depression therapy begins counseling, behavioral therapy and more often than not mood lifting medications known as anti-depressants.
However, anti-depressants affect different people in different ways. For some people anti-depressant medication proves to be highly effective almost immediately, and patients suffer few if any side effects from their medications.
For other patients, anti-depressant medication has little effect on their depression or the side effects from these medications are worse than the depression itself. For these people finding another treatment option to help reduce their depression symptoms is necessary. More and more of these patients are turning to TMS therapy as a non-invasive choice for treatment of their depression.
Who is a Good Choice For TMS Therapy?
Not everyone is a good choice to benefit from TMS therapy. People who suffer from mild or short term depression should no consider TMS therapy. Patients who choose this type of therapy should
• Suffer from depression symptoms that are moderate to severe and interferes with their daily life.
• Medication is not giving you relief from your depression symptoms
• Side effects from the medications you are taking are making you feel constantly ill or you are afraid of the long term side effects of taking anti-depressant medication.
• You want to try a non invasive treatment for depression
• You have dicussed TMS therapy with your mental health professional and they agree it might be right for you.
• You can commit yourself to 5-40 minute sessions a week for as long as 4 to 6 weeks of treatment.
Who is not a Good Candidate for TMS Therapy
Some people are not a good candidate for TMS therapy, or engaging in this therapy may pose more of a risk than is wise. Some of the reasons why you may not be a TMS candidate include:
• You are given to seizures or have a history of seizures.
• You have had metal plates placed in your head
• You have a stent in your neck or your brain
• You have a cardiac pacemaker
When Can You Expect to See Results for TMS Therapy?
Most patients suffering from depression are anxious to find some relief from their depression symptoms and so they want to how soon they can expect to see some results from any depression therapy or treatment they try. One of the first questions most patients ask regarding TMS is how soon they can expect to see some results. While some patients begin to feel a “lightness” of mood within 2 to 4 weeks, others need the entire 6 weeks or close to it to begin to actually feel a lessening of their depression symptoms.
