American scientists have identified a biomarker in the brain that can indicate spiking in symptoms of treatment-resistant depression. In a trial with a single patient, a device was implanted in the brain that monitored for such activity and fired targeted electrical pulses only when required. This resulted in successful treatment of clinical depression. ThePrint’s SandhyaRamesh explains these early findings.
