Social anxiety disorder (also known by social phobia) can be a chronic condition that causes excessive fear and anxiety in social interactions and public performances (ex. Public speaking. There are several risk factors that increase your chances of developing this disorder, including overprotective parenting and negative childhood experiences. Many hypotheses have been put forward as to the biological causes of social anxiety disorder, including an increase in HPA axis function and increased activity in the amygdala. We will discuss these issues in greater detail. Additionally, we will discuss the symptoms and social situations where they occur. Finally, we will discuss how DSM-5 criteria can be used to diagnose this condition and a treatment plan.
