Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects approximately 5% of children and adolescents, and is characterised by pervasive, developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
Stimulants can be effective in treating ADHD symptoms like inattention and impulsivity. However, it is not recommended that children with ADHD rely on stimulants. Experts agree that psychosocial interventions for ADHD are effective. However, there have been questions about the extent of their effectiveness. While small to moderate results have been reported by parents, little evidence has been presented for blinded outcomes (for example, teacher reports).
The researchers sought to determine if behavioural strategies that can improve sleep problems in children could also improve symptoms, behaviour and working memory in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and their parents’ mental health.
The researchers concluded that a short behavioural intervention in sleep can modestly reduce the severity of ADHD symptoms among children with ADHD who were most likely taking stimulant medication. The intervention had a positive effect on the children’s behaviour, sleep quality, and functioning. Most of these benefits lasted six months after the intervention. This intervention could be used in primary or secondary care.
