Narcissism is not a diagnosis. It is a psychological concept that helps to explain or define human behavior. It is defined as the love of oneself.
Named after the mythological Greek character Narcissus, Narcissus was a handsome hunter, who fell in love in a pool filled with water with his reflection. He leaned down to kiss his reflection but couldn’t see its face so he stared at it until he was thirsty.
Narcissism, as we know it today, in its simplest form is neither good or bad. It can be either healthy or pathological. Healthy narcissism refers to the ability to enjoy yourself and your achievements. Healthy narcissism can be developed in childhood if you have parents who are open to your opinions and allow you to express your vulnerabilities in a safe environment.
In essence, you are supposed to love your self. You can take on any job that you don’t like and still have the strength to love yourself. Although the arrows might make you feel unhappy at work or superficially, you can still be happy inside because your core allows you to enjoy life.
You have the ability to leave your job at the conclusion of the day and move on to something that will make you happy and repair your damaged outer skin.
Pathological narcissism is a tendency to over-value your self and do things only for yourself, often at the expense of others. This can be seen as the need to take advantage of others to feel a gain. If you tear down people to feel better, then you see someone else’s win as a loss.
