On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about how omega-3 supplementation can help improve symptoms of children with ADHD. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental disorder, is caused by a deficiency in brain connections. The brain is made up of 60-70% fat and most of those fatty acids are omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). These fatty acids are essential for brain development and the connections between brain areas involved in motor and cognitive system. They are often low in children due to a lack of fatty fish and grass-fed meat. Children also consume a lot processed foods, which can cause inflammation and prevent brain growth. Omega-3 supplements not only provide the building blocks of brain development but also have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce neuroinflammation. In mild ADHD cases, omega-3 supplements can be used as a substitute for medication.
