The Role of Self-Care in Managing ADHD Symptoms, featuring Samuele Cortese, MD, PhD

Self-care strategies can play an important role in supporting ADHD treatment and managing symptoms. Habits such as good sleep hygiene, regular exercise, stress management, ADHD coaching , therapy, and a balanced diet can all help a person address ADHD symptoms and strengthen treatment approaches. We are coming to a better understanding of how these self-care strategies are beneficial.

Samuele Cortese, MD, PhD, is currently professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Southampton and Honorary Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for Solent NHS Trust. Professor Cortese contributes to the editorial management of the systematic reviews/meta-analyses submitted to CAMH.

He is also adjunct associate professor with New York University. Prof. Cortese’s main research interest is around evidence synthesis in child and adolescent mental health. He was included in the list of the world’s most influential researchers of the past decade, demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1 percent by citations in the field of psychiatry/psychology in 2019 in Web of Science. In 2020 he also ranked No. 2 worldwide in terms of expertise on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) according to Expertscape.

Nikki is a Pharm D. candidate that was diagnosed with ADHD when she came to the US, as it was not common in her own country and thus overlooked. She shares with us how this disease impacted her understanding of self, and how she learned to embrace her differences to make her a better person. Nikki Amini is a Pharm D. Candidate at MCPHS, with some great stories to tell! She is originally from Iran, but moved to Canada at the age of 19, and eventually to the US for her doctorate.
