Major Depressive Disorder (also known as Clinical Depression) is one of the most common illnesses psychiatrists treat. It’s more than a matter of feeling sad or depressed. It is a particular set of symptoms. One of the symptoms you need to be aware of is a depressed mood. However, it must not be severe. Anhedonia is another possibility. This refers to the inability or inability to feel pleasure in activities that usually give one pleasure. Parents who suddenly find it difficult to spend time with their children are a common example. However, this can also happen in any other activity people once enjoyed and no longer get any enjoyment from. Another sign is an appetite disturbance. This is most commonly a loss in appetite. However, some people eat excessively. A sleep disturbance is another. This is most commonly characterized by early morning awakening. Patients will often wake up in the morning and be unable to go back to sleep. However, they may still want to get out of bed. You may also notice difficulty concentrating, feeling worthless or guilty, and decreased energy. The last sign is psychomotor retardation, or agitation. This is a change in activity that can be observed by others. Because we have effective treatments for depression, it is important to recognize signs and symptoms. Combining psychotherapy and medication is the best treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent many of the most severe depressive symptoms. Suicidal thoughts and acts can all be a sign of depression. Individuals with any of these symptoms should see a psychiatrist immediately to begin treatment to avoid the worst.
