The next episode (Ep.5) is coming soon! "Was it something I said?" It wasn't too long ago that a friend would introduce me to their group of friends and the conversation is energetic, people are laughing, then suddenly I feel a sharp elbow jab me in the ribs, or I get some serious side-eye from said-friend after I dared break the "rules" of small-talk by 'getting to the point.' There's nothing wrong with being a direct person and hating polite small-talk. Why take a detour to someone's heart and brain when you can just take the express lane. Right? Right?? Sure, if you're getting your needs met and you're meeting someone else's need. But, what if you have no radar for when your foot is in your mouth? What if you don't pick up on social cues until you get that jab in the ribs, or scolding from "friends" about how "rude and too familiar" you get with strangers. How "off-putting" you are. Every quote you just read is a direct correction/insult/ from people ranging from family members to best friends. And, former best friends. .The TRUTH is, your directness is not your problem, it's other people's judgment and narrow perception of "normal" social behavior. "Normal " meaning, people who don't have ADHD or Asperger's or any other neurodiverse wiring that allows us to "boldly" be direct, "boldly" state our intention, "boldly" announce our entrance into the room.. What is "bold" to Miss Manners is just the way we interact. "Bold" becomes the polite way of saying "there's something wrong with you" or "that was rude" or any other slight that makes us doubt ourselves, and lose confidence. You see that? That's another brick added to the wall we build around ourselves so we don't feel so awkward around other people who can't wait to judge us for being...uniquely, awkwardly, us.
