When a child with ADHD refuses to follow through on a reasonable request, it isn't always because they are defying your authority or being manipulative. Sometimes they simply are unable to comply with your request. It can be difficult to see the true nature of a child's behavior in the heat of the moment. This is a biological stress response. How can you react? What can you do to avoid future problems? This presentation will teach you how to calm your child down and how to solve their problems.

It was a live webinar. After Dr. Wayland's presentation, attendees were able to ask questions and hear from her.

Objectives:

Discuss the differences between top-down and bottom-up behaviors.
Learn how the autonomic nerve system works. When a person feels threatened, they feel safe, connected and secure.
Here are some ways people can respond to threats.
Here are some strategies that you can use to help your child when he or she is at different stages of regulation or dysregulation.

Sarah Wayland, PhD is a certified RDI (tm) consultant, and special needs care navigator. She lives in Riverdale Park. She is a member of numerous non-profit boards including The Arc of Prince George's County and The Parents' Place of MD. Guiding Exceptional Parents was her first company. It helps caregivers to navigate the support of children with neurological disabilities. Her website is www.guidingexceptionalparents.com.
