Children love to talk about their childhoods. But parents of ADHD children have been worried for years that their children’s growth would be impeded by their medication. They have nothing to be concerned about, according to new research. Miranda Savioli here with the latest health news.

ADHD is commonly treated with stimulants to increase focus and attention span. Researches found that ADHD and stimulants were not associated with adult height in ADHD patients. However, stimulant-treated males experienced their growth spurts three months later than those who were not.

If you have concerns about your child’s growth, talk to your pediatrician.

http://adhdinadults.com/ Anthony Rostain MD/MA, the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program emphasizes the importance of knowing your patients when prescribing medication for the treatment of ADHD. Primary care providers can identify potential abuse by understanding the characteristics of patients who are "at-risk".

ADHD medication can be misused because they act as stimulants. This is especially true in universities and colleges where prescriptions could be diverted from the original patient. Because stimulants are used by students as cognitive performance enhancers or recreationally, this type of misuse is much more common in colleges.

ADHD can be treated with low-risk stimulant medications. These medications include extended release (slow releasing) stimulants that have a lower risk of abuse. ADHD patients can also take non-stimulant medications.

Doctors might be concerned about the legal and medical consequences of a patient using or diverting federally-controlled medication like Adderall. Physicians are increasingly using careful documentation such as a contract detailing the medication's use and signing it by the patient. To avoid legal issues, doctors can use these contracts to diagnose ADHD in adults.
