Brain Zaps and Antidepressants: Why do they happen?

featured image

Brain zaps are part of what we call medication discontinuation syndrome. When you abruptly stop taking your medication, you will notice symptoms called medication discontinuation syndrome.

We are referring to what happens when you stop taking serotonin-enhancing antidepressants.

These symptoms can be easily remembered using the mnemonic FINISH
F – Flulike symptoms.
I – insomnia.
N – nausea or maybe even vomiting.
I – An imbalance such as dizziness, vertigo, or your head spinning.
S – Sensory disturbances, also known as electric shocks, are electrical shocks that appear to be coming from the brain.
H – Hyperarousal. This would include anxiety, aggression, irritability or even jerkiness.

Apathy is one of those mental states that can be very debilitating. It's not like you care about anything. It can be described as a reduced desire to engage in goal-directed activities within 3 domains: Interest, Initiative, and Emotional responsiveness.

A flow state is a state of positive mental health where you are fully engaged in challenging activities but not so difficult that you feel like you have complete control. This can help you overcome apathy. How wired you are will determine what you can do to achieve a flow state. You can get some ideas from the Flow Genome Project assessment.
